James is currently the CG Supervisor of Modeling at Bron Animation Studios where he helps over see the front end production on the feature animated movie "The Willoughbys" and has also helped on the animated feature "The Henchmen". He also worked at Cinesite Studios as a Senior Modeler on characters for the animated feature film called "Gnome Alone".
James was also a Senior Modeler at Dreamworks Animation Studios, He has created characters, props, and environments for feature animated movies such as “How to Train Your Dragon 2”, “Puss in Boots”, “Turbo”, and “Penguins of Madagascar”. During his four years there he followed his passion of sculpting and worked with various artists to lead the development, creation, and manufacturing of fine art collectible sculptures for multiple productions within the studio. Among the sculptures created where characters from "Home", “Madagascar 3”, “Turbo”, and “How to Train Your Dragon 2”. He also helped to develop, create, and fully manufacture Dreamworks Studios Anniversary sculptures given to employees on anniversary milestones. Character sculptures include "Shrek", Alex -"Madagascar", Po -"Kung-Fu Panda".
Before Dreamworks Animation Studios, James worked as a Senior CG Modeler for Walt Disney Animation Studios for over fourteen years on the movies "Tangled", "Bolt","Meet the Robinsons", "Chicken Little", "Dinosaur" and other various projects at the studio, called "Prep and Landing", "Mickey's Philharmagic", "Disney's A Christmas Carol" "Snow Dogs",and "Kangaroo Jack". He worked as a lead on two productions, “Dinosaur” and “Kangaroo Jack”. He helped to create Vis Dev Models for “Bolt” and “Prep and Landing”. He helped sculpt and lead in the creation of traditional maquettes for the movies “Chicken Little” and “Meet the Robinsons”. He loved helping with the Disney mentor program and summer internship program, and also had the privilege of working on special projects with Disney’s Imagineering.
He started his career at Rhythm and Hues Studios where he worked for two years as a sculptor for digitizing models and became a CG Modeler for Film’s such as “Batman Forever”, ”Babe”, and “The Nutty Professor”. He also worked on commercials such as the “Coke-Cola Polar Bears”, “Jolly Ranchers”, and “Gilbey's Gin”.
In addition to his CG Modeling career James was co-owner of Atomic Monkey, where he lead the development, creation, and oversaw manufacturing runs of maquettes for multiple productions within Dreamworks Studios. He was also involved with creating digital models and master prototypes used for toys, collectibles, and action figures for the entertainment and consumer product industries related to animated films, TV shows, comics, and video games.
He loves to teach and be involved with local community artist classes. He has also taught Traditional Sculpting and CG Character Modeling courses at the Art Institute of California - Los Angeles, CG Character Modeling courses at Gnomon School of Visual Effects , Art Center College of Design – Pasadena, and most recently California Institute of the Arts - Valencia.
James attended the California Institute of the Arts, Character Animation Program. He has also served in the US ARMY as an Armor Crewman on the Abrams M1A1 Tank, in the 2nd Infantry and 5th Infantry Divisions. Then after, served in the California Army National Guard 1-185 Infantry Division.
